Steve Weiss
Principal
“We funnel the energy of everyone to one person out front guiding the team. It sounds crazy, but you can actually feel that energy in the homes we complete. For example, our model is a real home where people live, work and play and you can feel the life force that created it. That’s the part I love most.”
Like Steve Briggs, being a Principal at SAI means I wear several hats. As Master Builder, my job is to mentally take apart and reassemble your project in order to assign labor and material costs. I start from the site and how the current building sits on it. From there, I find the best way to get to the end result expeditiously and in the most cost-effective manner possible. There are thousands of tasks involved in the construction process and each is interdependent on the other. Having a clear plan is vital. As with life--things happen that effect the plan. I’ve learned to be flexible enough to adapt to new situations and keep the project on task. I talk to subcontractors daily about how to get the best value with the most productive path. Their input is critical to ensure I am not proposing something unreasonable. With all the quantities and values assembled, I then produce a budget for the job. This process usually takes 10 to 20 hours depending on the size and detail of the project. I then meet with the client and review their plans and budgets so that we can get to an agreed upon number and proceed to the construction phase. Because I am also responsible for all the construction that takes place at SAI. I make regular visits to our jobsites and check on quality, progress and consistency. I field dozens of calls a day with questions about procedures for various construction techniques from our crews and supervisors as well as our subcontractors and Architects.
I work with the Project Managers on budgets and purchasing as well as the scheduling of work on their jobs. I work with Accounting to review Job costs and Receivables. I also work with my Partner Steve Briggs to keep SAI on the path we’ve set. We speak daily about current tasks and the necessary items to keep projects moving forward. My highest priority is making you happy. I hope to have the opportunity to do that very soon.
